Understanding MPLS and its Benefit to Business

MPLS (multi-protocol label switching) is a technology service that makes routing information on a network faster by controlling the flow and destination of data. Today, many big businesses choose to make use of MPLS because it is quick, reliable and efficient. MPLS is flexible, allowing network operators the ability “to divert and route traffic around link failures, congestion, and bottlenecks.”

So how does MPLS work? One way to better understand how MPLS works is to picture some data that you want to send to another branch or location as information that has been packaged in a shipping box or package. MPLS assigns, or places, one or more shipping labels on the box with information about what is in the box and its intended destination.

As your data travels through the system, there is no need for the box to be opened to know what is inside in order to know where to send it because the label gives the MPLS routers the shipping information on the outside. As the data packet (box) moves between network nodes, the label is checked, information used for processing is dropped off, and a new label is assigned to replace the earlier one. This process tells the routers what kind of operation to do based on the incoming packet label so the packet is processed very quickly.

Business Benefits of MPLS

This MPLS labeling directs data between network nodes on short path labels rather than long network addresses making it an excellent mechanism in high-performance telecommunication networks. Benefits of MPLS include:

  • Efficiency – MPLS labels improve speed & efficiency. Voice & time sensitive data are prioritized over routine data.
  • Scalability – Highly flexible, locations can be easily added.
  • Savings – Combining voice & data networks cuts costs.
  • No Capital Outlay – No equipment to purchase, install or maintain.
  • Data Security – MPLS meets or exceeds HIPAA regulations.
  • Deployment – MPLS can connect as few as 2 facilities to as many as 5,000 locations
  • Technology Standard – MPLS is not dependent on any particular technology and is protocol independent.
